After You is an unreleased song by Kanye West that was intended for his scrapped album Yeezus II. On the song, Ye sings (primarily mumble) about subjects such as "I ain't drinking like I used to/And I hope that's enough," as well as "I ain't cheating like I used to/I hope that's enough." The track is dated from 2013-2014.

The song's instrumental has been used in Sia's 2016 single "Reaper" and more noticeably on Pusha T's 2019 single "Coming Home" featuring Lauryn Hill.

Production

The song is heavily built upon a vocal sample of Roberta Flack's 1977 song "After You".

Background

The initial freestyle and sample chop of the song had been created on November 8, 2013, the song at this point being titled "Afta U". This freestyle had very low quality vocals and was not rerecorded for until the 11th of that same month when the song had been retitled to "After You".

The song was not touched for another month until the production was tweaked on January 1st of 2014. Throughout February and early March of that year, Kanye had not recorded for the song, although multiple references were recorded for the song from KIRBY, Sam Dew and Andrea Martin.

The last known freestyle was recorded on April 21st of 2014 and featured a 5-minute freestyle. Some time between this and May, the song had been shortly given to Pusha T and John Legend. On the first of May, new drums from Keyon Christ were added to the song.

Repurposed Songs

Reaper

After the song failed to find any use from Kanye or Pusha T, the song had been briefly given to Rihanna for her album ANTI. Although unclear if Rihanna ever recorded for the song, Australian singer Sia recorded a reference for the song. After the song failed to find use on the record, Sia released the song as a lead single for her 2016 album This Is Acting.

Coming Home

After the release of Sia's song, Pusha T picked the song back up for himself in 2019 with a new feature from Lauryn Hill replacing John Legend's initial chorus. The song, as said by Pusha T himself went through "at least 9 different renditions" before its final release on January 26, 2019.
