"Alright" is a song by American rapper Twista. The song was released on July 14, 2009, as one of two iTunes exclusive bonus tracks for his seventh studio album, Category F5.[1][2] It features vocals from Kanye West, who also provides production alongside producer No I.D. Upon release, the song was covered by several music publications, including The Fader and Rap‑Up.
Production[]
According to No I.D. in an interview with Complex, the production on the track was largely West's creation. He described it as his first collaboration with Twista.[3] The Fader characterized the song as featuring a "contemplative piano beat."[2] It incorporates a vocal sample from "Drag Rap" by The Showboys. It runs at 120BPM on the key of E major.
Background[]
According to No I.D. in an interview with Complex, West had a rough version of the instrumental intended for Twista. However, Twista was facing a deadline for Category F5, and West couldn’t finish the beat in time. Due to this, No I.D. stepped in to complete the beat.[3] The song was recorded during the sessions for Category F5 and was released as an iTunes exclusive bonus track. DJBooth noted that the collaboration came after their earlier work on "Overnight Celebrity."[4]
Writing and lyricism[]
"Alright" is a hip-hop song with influences from electronic pop music. Twista provides his stylistic fast-rap delivery, while West supplies a punch line-driven verse.
Critical reception[]
"Alright" received generally positive reviews from critics. The Fader stated that “Alright” was an “excellent” track, praising its production and contrasting it with Twista’s "Tommy Gun" flow. The review also highlighted West's distinct pronunciation of the word "gnarly."[2] In 2018, Complex listed the track as West's 97th best song in his full discography.[5]
