"And They Came Back" is an unreleased song by Kanye West and James Blake that had been intended for their unreleased collaborative album planned to be in collaboration with producer No I.D., WAR (2022).[1] The song is set as an intro to another song by West and Blake, "THIS ONE HERE" and features production from James as well as Dom Maker.
Production[]
The song features production from both James Blake and Dom Maker and similar to "THIS ONE HERE" has a bass that interpolates Lou Reed's song "Walk On The Wild Side".[2]
Background[]
- Main article: THIS ONE HERE
The song was initially made in 2022 and was made separate from "This One Here", potentially initially set to be a prelude to the song on early copies of the album instead of an intro to the track.[1] The song evidently wouldn't become one with This One Here until much later in development, a version of "This One Here" without this track tacked onto it being played in a club in London in September of that year.[3]
The song would later be combined with This One Here as one song and would appear as "And They Came Back / This One Here" as the closing track on a nine-track copy of the album before it was scrapped. Past this, this song was seemingly scrapped as another further along version of This One Here featuring new vocals from Ty Dolla $ign made for Bad Bitch Play Book that Ty would play on stream did not feature this track as the intro.[4]
The song would be played on SNEAKO's Parti stream on May 1st, 2025 as a separate song. The song was initially thought to be an unheard minute of This One Here, though further analyzation from fans would confirm the engineer had not interacted with the laptop when the song abruptly ended.[5] When asked by the chat to "release the songs played even with mumble", he would ask his team in the room to help clear the opens.[6] However, Digital Nas would later confirm that no more "unreleased" albums would be released as a result of DONDA 2 not doing well chart-wise, meaning the two albums hinted at releasing, WAR and Yandhi had ultimately been scrapped and the James Blake and No I.D.-produced version of this song has officially been scrapped.[7]
Lyrics[]
[Intro: James Blake]
It's not supposed to be sad (It's not supposed to be sad)
I don't know why you're with me (I don't know why you're crying)
It's not supposed to be sad (It's not supposed to be perfect)
I don't know why you're with me (I don't know why you're crying)
[Verse: Kanye West & James Blake]
First daughter's my mama
Second daughter, grandmama
(Crying) First son is your father
Second son, your grandfather
(You're crying) First daughter's my mama
Second daughter's grandmama
(Crying) First son is your father
Second son, your grandfather
[Refrain: Both, Kanye West & James Blake]
And they came back
And they, and they came back
They all come back
Somebody asked me, "Do we turn to birds when we die?"
I replied, "Do angels have wings?"
And they came back
And they came back
And they came back
Trivia[]
- This is the only known song made in the WAR sessions to feature a fully finished verse from Ye made in the time period in which the collaborative album was worked on. Even the other tracks made amidst the sessions that are closest to a fully finished state feature short but still present incomprehensible freestyle portions (ex. "For Once In My Life" and "Quiet").[8]
