Behind The Beats is an instrumental mixtape by Kanye West, Ferris Bueller & Plain Pat released sometime in 2003.[1][2] It has 41 tracks, and the majority of the beats are from Kanye West or JAY-Z songs, with a few exceptions such as Beanie Segal, Foxy Brown, Scarface, Talib Kweli, etc.[3]
Background[]
In a February 2014 interview with billboard, Ferris Bueller stated that at Mos Def (nka Yasiin Bey)'s birthday party, he met West and offered him a mixtape that he and Plain Pat had done. Kanye already had the project, however, sparking a relationship between the two. Later on, he and Pat were conceptualizing a mixtape, now known as "Behind The Beats". He told Pat that he wanted to make the mixtape more like an experience, explaining the stories behind songs. The two thought about which producer/artist they wanted to be the star of the tape, mentioning 88-Keys, but finally settling on Kanye West.[4]
They proceeded to go to West's building in Hoboken, New Jersey, with him, to get the instrumentals and record the interludes.[4]
