"CARNIVAL" (originally titled "Honor Roll"[1]) is a song by ¥$ (Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign) and Rich The Kid[2] that was released as the twelfth track from ¥$'s debut studio album, VULTURES 1 (2024).[3] It was released as a single on February 15, 2024, serving as the third single from the album.[4] The song features vocals from Playboi Carti and The Hooligans, the latter of whom is uncredited.[5]
Production[]
The song samples Kanye's 2010 song, "Hell Of A Life", which itself sampled The Mojo Men's 1966 song, "She's My Baby".[6]
Background[]
In an interview in 2024, Rich The Kid revealed that the song was originally made by him and was titled "Honor Roll".[7] The original version also featured Ty Dolla $ign before it was given to Ty and Ye for their collaborative album. While the song was not seen on any VULTURES track lists in the Japan or Italy sessions, it was first previewed at the Las Vegas rave on December 15, 2023.[5] A leaked version of the song from February 6, 2024, reveals that Ye's last line in his verse was "Got my kids in a fake school, we ain't Jewish".[8]
The song was again previewed at the Chicago listening party on February 8, 2024, with this version sounding drastically more finished.[9] However, a day later, Ozzy Osbourne revealed that he did not give Ye permission to sample the song, "War Pigs", but Ye did it anyway.[10] At the listening party in New York on February 9, the song was updated to replace the "War Pigs" riff with the "Hell Of A Life" riff and included a new verse from Carti.[11]
On February 15, the song was released as a single. An EP for the song was also released, titled the CARNIVAL PACK.[12] It features a "HOOLIGANS VERSION", which just includes the refrain and chorus. An acapella version was also featured in the pack.
The song was originally planned to re-release on Rich The Kid's album, Life's A Gamble.[13] However, for unknown reasons, these plans were scrapped.
Music video[]
On February 14, 2024, Ty and Kanye teased a potential music video for "CARNIVAL".[14] The music video, directed by Jon Rafman, was released on March 11. It is a slideshow of various AI-generated scenes. The version of "CARNIVAL" in the music video has slightly different mixing and new vocals in between Ye's verse, which originate from a video of a Spanish man screaming "Puro pinche carnival y no mamadas".[15]
Chart performances[]
"CARNIVAL" first reached the Billboard Hot 100 charts on February 24, placing at #3.[16] After losing the #1 spot to Beyoncé's single, "Texas Hold 'Em" on March 9, "CARNIVAL" climbed to number #1 on the Hot 100 on March 11, becoming Kanye's fifth #1 song and his first since "E.T." (2011). Because of this, Ye has become the first rapper ever to have topped the charts in three different decades (2000s, 2010s, 2020s).[17][18] Besides the U.S., the song also reached #1 in other countries, including Greece, Iceland, and Latvia.[19]
