"Codeine" is a song that began as a God's Country era freestyle from February 8, 2020.[2] Despite not being worked on again past its initial freestyle amidst these sessions, the song was later worked on in the late 2020 DONDA sessions. The song features a chorus and two open verses.[3] After this, though, the song was seemingly scrapped.
According to insider Saint Leon, the song had been abruptly revived amidst the Bad Bitch Play Book sessions in mid-2023, even appearing on the infamous 40-track-long tracklist from Italy, listing as the twenty-third track.
On March 9, 2024, a song was played at a private listening party in LA. The song shared the same sample as "Codeine" and was believed to be a reworked and finished version of Codeine. However, according to an insider, the song played, which was actually named "MELROSE", was a completely different song than "Codeine" and that the sample for the song was only added later into production for the song.[4]
