Donda (Pio Pico sessions)

Spirits Over The Horizon, or, SOTH, is an unofficial name used by the community to refer to Donda between March and early July 2021, when the project resumed development, being completely changed from its 2020 incarnation.[1]

Alternatively, this era is referred to as "Pio Pico Sessions", "Green Tiles", or rarely, "Gallery Sessions", named after the studio in which these sessions took place.

In late May and early June 2021, after radio silence from Ye for months, it was discovered by fans that Ye was holding studio sessions at a "Green Tile" studio. Eventually it was discovered that multiple collaborators were present such as Pusha T, Kid Cudi, Future, Travis Scott, Playboi Carti, and more.[2][3] It would later be discovered that these studio sessions were taking place at Pio Pico, a private art gallery in Los Angeles, CA, which had been turned into a studio by Ye.[4]

In these studio sessions, work would resume on Donda. The album would take a whole new direction, and the changes are significant enough to not only be distinct from DONDA (2020), but also the listening party versions of the album, as a more experimental sound would be worked on during this time, of which was ultimately abandoned by the time the Listening Parties began.

Many ideas that originated during these sessions would be developed further and eventually find their way onto Donda's released version, such as "Jail", and "New Again". We'd also see the birth of tracks for Pusha T, French Montana, and the first "Come To Life" freestyle.

The name Spirits Over The Horizon came into use late Summer - early Autumn of that year once "Trusted Sources" claimed the name was an official album title at some point. By the following Summer, some of the community abandoned the name since it seemed to have been made up (probably to promote leak sales)[5], as its legitimacy was never proven by Ye or his team.

Gallery Freestyles[]

The Gallery Freestyles, unofficially referred to as Spirits Over The Horizon, consist mainly of mumble refs from Kanye, with more cohesive refs from Don Toliver, Labrinth, and CyHi. Justin White has refs on "JW and OxV_MK edit".

While there are plenty more tracks / alternate versions from this era than what's listed below, at least 7 sessions can be grouped together based on dates from file names and metadata.

Freestyle session over 7 beats produced by BoogzDaBeast, Ojivolta, and Plain Pat. "JW and OxV_MK edit" is re-recorded by Kanye over a longer version of the beat, with noticable changes from the previous composition.

"Pat x Ye 1" is the original freestyle of "Hype" without punch-ins. The instrumental is the sample used in "Hype". The Plain Pat collaborations stand out as very dark and gritty, with the second having Kanye record over a stripped version of "Pat x Ye 1". "Pat x Ye 3" is the original recording for majority of Kanye's lines for "Where They At" by French Montana.

"Sheep" is one of the first "Pure Souls" freestyles and is a CyHi reference track. Uses the OG production used in the version played at LP1. Original snippet leaked October 6th, 2021, with two more leaking November 27th, 2022. Leaked as a bonus to the "Hybrid" groupbuy.
