"Eazy" is the sixteenth and final track from Kanye West's demo studio album, Donda 2 (2022) and the second track from The Game's tenth studio album, DRILLMATIC Heart vs. Mind (2022). It was released as a single on January 15, 2022, serving as the lead single from Donda 2. At first, it was released exclusively on Spotify, before releasing on other platforms one day later.

The song is produced by an array of producers including Mike Dean, Hit-Boy, and DJ Premier. On the track, The Game namedrops Dr. Dre while Ye's verse is centered around his separation from ex-wife Kim Kardashian. The track is known for Ye's lines "God saved me from that crash/Just so I can beat Pete Davidson's ass."

Production

The song heavily samples "Eazy Duz It" by Eazy-E, giving the track its name and lyrics for its chorus.

Background

Kim Kardashian's divorce from Kanye West began as early as the opening weeks of January 2021. The process went on for the rest of the year while Kanye made numerous statements that indicated he was in denial of it. By the end of the year, Kim sought legal device to be legally recognized as single after Kanye sung about her at the Free Larry Hoover concert.

Starting January 2, West was seen with actress Julia Fox, who is referred to in the line "and my new bitch mad." The couple would go on to separate about a month after the song's release.

A video of Kanye asking DJ Premier to do a scratch for the song was posted on January 12. In the video, Kanye was seen with The Game, Pusha T, and Mike Dean. Said plans went through as the song was released exclusively on Spotify three days later and then on other streaming platforms on the day after.

After the release of the song, Jay Electronica posted messages between himself and Kanye teasing a remix to the song featuring him. Its unclear if plans ever went through and if this had ever been recorded for.

The Game joined Kanye on-stage to perform the song together at the Donda Experience Performance on February 22, 2022.

Cover art

As soon as Kanye posted the album cover with the caption "MY LIFE WAS NEVER EAZY" on Instagram two days before the song's release, the track cover was left with mixed reception.

The graphic cover features a dead and skinned monkey facing the camera with its arms extended in front of a red background. The photo was taken by photographer Nick Knight in 1997 as part of his research for the War editorial for Big Magazine. The specific picture wasn't published until 2013, when Knight shared a curated set of images for SHOWstudio. About the artwork, Knight wrote:

These corpses of skinned animals had nothing of life left in them, not even the most tiny speck or hint of their former beauty, majesty and purpose. However, they were not inhabited by death in the way they had been by life. Once the life had gone, they were just bags of barely held together flesh, bone and sinew. Nothing left, except their smell; they stank, they reeked. Every time, for years afterwards when I looked at the 10 by 8 transparencies, the stench came straight back to me as pungent as if each image was saturated with it. That, I concluded was death.

The album cover has prompted a response from PETA but has not been changed or censored on any streaming platforms.

Music videos

Two music videos for the song were released two months after the song's release, in March 2022. The first is a combination of live-action and clay animation that features Kanye kidnapping, burying alive, and decapitating Pete Davidson. It subsequently attracted controversy, which Kanye responded to by saying "Art is not a proxy for any ill or harm, Any suggestion otherwise about my art is false and mal intended."

The first video was released on March 3, while the second one was released on March 8. The second video is entirely animated and features the skinned monkey from the cover singing the lines and doing random tasks such as driving the rappers' car, dancing around, and beating up Pete Davidson while the iconic line is played.

• A close friend of Pete revealed that he thought the "God sent me from that crash, just so I could beat Pete Davidson's ass" line was hilarious. That same week, however, Pete was seen walking with security guards, something that he had never done before in his career. In "Security", Kanye references these security guards, stating that they are in danger.
