"Everything We Need" (previously known as "Jeet" and "The Storm") is the sixth track from Kanye West's ninth studio album, JESUS IS KING (2019).[1] The track features vocals from Ty Dolla $ign, Ant Clemons, and uncredited vocals from the Sunday Service Choir and tizhimself. The song is adapted from the scrapped Yandhi song, "The Storm".[2]
In the song, Ye tells the listener to be grateful of everything that God has given.
Background[]
The Storm Production Began Somewhere In September of 2018, Kanye Originally made a Freestyle, But Later Turned Into The Storm Adding, Kid Cudi, Ty Dolla $ign, Ant Clemons and a XXXTentacion Verse. At some point the song was Named "XXX"
The song had originally been owned by the artist "B. Lewis" before it was given to Kanye around September of 2018.[3] Around this time, XXXTENTACION had also recorded his "Yes Indeed Freestyle", where his verse from it would later be used in later versions of the song.[4]
Kanye recorded his initial freestyle of the song alongside Ant Clemons around this time and at this point in time the song was officially named "Jeet".[5] Ant Clemons would later record a reference for Kanye for the song alongside Really Doe on September 18.
By September 22nd, the song began to be built up, the song now featuring XXXTENTACION's verse from his Yes Indeed Freestyle. The song at this point in time went by the name "Leave It In".[6] The first known feature Kid Cudi would record for the song was recorded on September 24, where the song had finally been named "The Storm".
After Yandhi missed it's planned release date of September 29, the song continued to be worked on. There were not many noticeable changes between versions during these sessions other than an added Andrew Dawson outro on one version. The next release date for the song alongside Yandhi was set to Black Friday, but was once again pushed back due to Camp Flog Gnaw.
When Yandhi was reworked considerably to take a more "healing music" twist with Timbaland in 2019, the song was tweaked considerably with new production from Timbaland and Team Timbo. At this point, Kid Cudi's feature had also been cut from the song.[7]
However, after Ye had a revelation at Coachella in 2019, he scrapped Yandhi and began working on a new project, Jesus Is King. "The Storm" is one of many songs from the Yandhi era that were reworked to fit the more religious themes. Because of this, Kanye's first verse was slightly changed and XXX's verse was replaced with another verse from Ye. Cudi's verse was also completely removed for unknown reasons.
The last version of the song featured guest vocals from the Sunday Service Choir and less production and went by the name "Everything We Need" which it would carry into it's Jesus Is King sessions. Past this point, the song was completely reworked and the XXXTENTACION feature had been cut.[8]
A remix of the song was planned to release on Kanye and Dr. Dre's collaborative album, JESUS IS KING: The Dr. Dre Version, but neither the remix nor the album released. The remix features Ye's original first verse from "The Storm" along with an outro with vocals from Marsha Ambrosius.[9]
