"FIELD TRIP" is a song by ¥$ (Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign), Playboi Carti, and Don Toliver that was released as the third track from Ye and Ty's second studio album, VULTURES 2, on August 3, 2024. The song features vocals from Kodak Black and was released as a single that same day.

Production

The song uses an unlicensed sample of Portishead's 2008 song "Machine Gun". The track plays at 122 BPM at 4/4 and is in the key F# Minor.

Background

"Field Trip" first dates back to 2023 where the beat was initially given to Lil Uzi Vert for their album Luv Is Rage 3 whom created the song "All Yours". Similar to Uzi's song "Patience", around the same time the beat was also passed onto Don Toliver for his album HARDSTONE PSYCHO and created the song "DISCONNECTED", featuring both Kanye West and Playboi Carti. For a short period of time, the song was given to Playboi Carti for his album MUSIC, though it was eventually handed off to Kanye and Ty Dolla $ign in late-2023 for their album VULTURES 1.

One of the first versions of the song under Kanye and Ty Dolla $ign featured Lil Durk, but was reportedly excluded from the song after sending in a verse with the line "Take my Yeezy shirt off and use it as a doormat," which was later changed to "I take my Yeezy hat off and give my lil' hoe that." Despite this, Durk was featured on the thirteenth track of the album, "DEAD." Later versions of the song would feature Playboi Carti and Don Toliver alongside the tweaked Durk verse.

Shortly after the release of VULTURES 1, a snippet would leak on February 13th of 2024 of the song in its December stages. The song would later be previewed again in multiple VULTURES 2 listening parties, with yet another rewritten Durk verse and a new Kodak Black verse. Kanye had also attempted to record for his verse, but his verse had not been worked on since then. The song was slated for release and was among the track on the May 3rd release date, but had missed it alongside the rest of the album.

Despite the album's shift in direction, "Field Trip" was among the tracks brought over and reworked. Ty Dolla $ign had rewritten his verse for the song and Carti's verse was censored to fit the clean theme of the record. Rapper Young Moose has been confirmed to have recorded a verse for the song in place of Lil Durk's.

A demo version of the track from late December leaked as a bonus for the "Pressure" groupbuy on May 26, 2024. On August 2, the song was seen on a tracklist from the Yeezy website, listed as the fifth track. It was moved up to the third track by the time the album released. Lil Durk's verse was also removed and instead of finalizing Kanye's verse he placed an AI voiceover over a reference track recorded for him.

On August 3rd, a version of the song from yeezy.com leaked featuring a mumble Kanye verse, no Kodak and the scrapped Durk verse. The file was dated May 7th.

Months past the song's initial release, the song continued to be worked on with slight mixing fixes and placing Carti's vocals more on-beat on October 17, 2024.

• This song and "SKY CITY" marked the first time that Ye had used AI in his released songs, which he would prevalently use throughout his songs after VULTURES 2.
  • This, however, doesn't mark the first time he's used AI in general; months prior, Childish Gambino would tease a song on Gilga Radio featuring Kanye West that was intended to release on Banda Stone and the New World though Ye's vocals were entirely AI.
• It has been rumored that Tyler, The Creator had also featured on the song, however it's very unlikely that he had ever recorded for it.
  • It was also spread that Eminem had recorded a feature verse for this song and reference vocals for Ye's "Love me the most" freestyle for this song. However, this information, along with all other Eminem collaborations on VULTURES, was later proven to be false.
• The song's opening line, "This ain't cheddar, this quiche", was referenced in a commercial for PrizePicks.
