Kanye West Wiki

"FML" is the eleventh track from Kanye West's seventh studio album, The Life of Pablo (2016).[1] It features vocals from The Weeknd, who sings the song's hook.[2]

In the song, Kanye raps about his struggles with his marriage with his then-wife, Kim Kardashian, and also talks about how the public actively tries to split the duo up.[3]

Production[]

The outro heavily samples Section 25's 1981 song, "Hit".[4]

Background[]

A rough beat to the song was initially produced some time in 2014 during the Yeezus II sessions, though it is unclear if Kanye had ever recorded for it.[5] The beat would later be cut down noticeably and looped for further versions. The song has been said to initially have been in the possession of Travis Scott but was later given to Kanye during their trade where Travis was given the song "Piss On Your Grave".[6]

The song was given to Kanye during the sessions for his SWISH album in late-2015, the first mumble demo to the song dating back to December 9th.[7] Travis had also had a verse on this version of the song though it was cut from later versions. This song was also among the 40 songs Kanye stated Young Thug and him had recorded for, presumably from early January before any additional production had been added.[8] Yung Lean would also meet up with Kanye and record a verse for the song, though it had went unused.[9]

Some time in late-January, Kanye would finish his verse and additional production would be added to the song, essentially finishing the song.[10] That would not be the end of work on the song however, as producer Keyon Christ stated the song had been "reworked a thousand times", a version with production from DJDS dating to the 23rd.[11] The following day on January 24th, Kanye tweeted a picture of the track list for SWISH, showing that "FML" was listed as the eighth track on the album.[12] A day later, Big Boy revealed an updated version of the track list with "FML" as the ninth track.[13]

The song was carried into the short-lived Waves sessions in late-January and early-February where The-Dream would record backing vocals throughout the song on the 27th of January.[14] By February, the song was in a near-finished state and would release officially on February 14.[15]

The song would be officially updated on March 30th, fixing mixing issues as well as adding backing Kanye vocals to the Weeknd's hook.[16]

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1: Kanye West]
I been waiting for a minute
For my lady
So I can't jeopardize that for one of these hoes
I been livin' without limits
As far as my business
I'm the only one that's in control
I been feeling all I've given
For my children
I will die for those I love
God, I'm willing
To make this my mission
Give up the women
Before I lose half of what I own
I been thinking
'Bout my vision
Pour out my feelings
Revealing the layers to my soul
My soul
The layers to my soul
Revealing the layers to my soul

[Chorus: The Weeknd]
They wish I would go ahead and fuck my life up
Can't let them get to me
And even though I always fuck my life up
Only I can mention me

[Verse 2: Kanye West]
See, before I let you go
One last thing I need to let you know
You ain't never seen nothing crazier than
This n***a when he off his Lexapro
Remember that last time in Mexico?
Remember that last time, the episode?
Asking me why the hell I text in code?
Four times just to say, "Don't text me, ho"
Told you four times, "Don't test me, ho"
And we finna lose all self-control
But you ain't finna be raising your voice at me
Especially when we in the Giuseppe store
But I'ma have the last laugh in the end
'Cause I'm from a tribe called "Check-a-ho"
Yeah, I'ma have to laugh in the end
'Cause I'm from a tribe called "Check-a-ho"
And I...

[Chorus: The Weeknd]
They wish I would go ahead and fuck my life up
Can't let them get to me
And even though I always fuck my life up
Only I can mention me
They wish I would go ahead and fuck my life up
Can't let them get to me
And even though I always fuck my life up
Only I can mention me

[Outro: Kanye West & Section 25]
See through the veil
And forget all of your cares
Throw them
Throw them away
Don't stop your loving
Don't stop for nothing
No, not for nothing
They don't wanna see me love you
Don't now, don't stop it
They always love it
They always wanna
They don't wanna see me love you
See through the veil
They don't wanna see me love you
And forget all your cares
They don't wanna see me love you
Throw them
Throw them away
Ooh, life's a feeling and
Ooh, the body is a feeling, yeah
