"FRIED" is a song by ¥$ (Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign) that was released as the fourth track from their second studio album, VULTURES 2, on August 3, 2024. The song features a chant from the Hooligans, who were most notably featured on "CARNIVAL". They are uncredited, though.[1]

Production[]

The song, like other Kanye songs created during 2024 features an instrumental built around his choir, the Hooligans.

Background[]

The song was initially owned by Rich The Kid and was titled "BLEED IT". According to Rodri, Rich and Ye worked on the song in the first week of February 2024.[2] On March 6, Rich and Ye recorded more vocals for the song.[3] The song at this point featured production from Ojivolta, TheLabCook, and Digital Nas and featured low quality vocals from Kanye on the chorus.[4]

The song was given to Kanye for VULTURES 2 sometime shortly the demo was created whom recorded a rough freestyle for the song.[5] Bump J and Ant Clemons had also helped write the song.[6] The song was briefly turned into skit for unclear reasons, the skit sampling Kanye's encounter with paparazzi that had occurred just before the release of the first VULTURES with Kanye also slightly interpolating the Ant Clemons reference for the song.[7][8] Past this point, the beat had been completely reworked from its initial "BLEED IT" demo and now had a beat built around The Hooligans, similar to "CARNIVAL".[9]

The song was revealed at a private VULTURES 2 listening event on March 9, 2024, and was later played at a listening event for VULTURES 2 in Phoenix on March 10. Fans nicknamed the song "Enemies", but on March 11, Ye revealed to a fan that the song was officially titled "FRIED".[10] Ty would not record for the song until March 20, although his contributions on this version of the song only consist of punch-in vocals and harmonizing with The Hooligans.[11]

The song had appeared on the track list intended for the May 3rd album copy, though neither the album nor the song had released when the date had rolled around as Ty Dolla $ign would not record a semi-finished verse until May 6. The song was confirmed to have been brought back for the rework for VULTURES 2, though the earliest copy of the song from this era featured a verse from Ty Dolla $ign in support of Diddy that was forced to be replaced in later versions.[12] During this era, the production had also been reworked by Wes SIngerman and Taydex to help fit the cleaner sound the rework was intended to have, although this beat had ended up not being used.[13]

The song had officially released with a finished Ty Dolla $ign verse on August 3rd, 2024 apart of the officially released VULTURES 2 album. The song had been continually tweaked months past its release with added adlibs on August 5 that had been removed the following day and completely censored on August 8 that would not be undone until the 15th.[14] At the 2nd China listening party on the 28th of September, a new version of the song with a new added guitar intro.[15]

Music video[]

The music video for "FRIED" was released onto Ye's YouTube channel on August 7, 2024.[16] It features hundreds of masked people running around buildings. It was directed by Carlos Rico, who shared a behind-the-scenes clip of the making of the video on August 9, 2024.[17]

Lyrics[]

[Intro]
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh

[Verse 1]
I done had too many friends that died
Sometimes I can't believe I'm still alive
She told you I ain't had it, but she lied

[Chorus]
Boy, don't play with me, you know I'm fried
Boy, don't play with me, you know I'm fried

[Verse 2]
She givin' blowjobs and I applied
She said she starvin', order her some fries
Then I ate the breast, then the thighs
Then I gave the rest to the guys
You was typin' crazy out your mind
This is not a typo, we reply
Now you spillin' Type-O, out your side

[Chorus]
Boy, don't play with me, you know I'm—
Boy, don't play with me, you know I'm fried

[Verse 3]
Pray on our enemies when we dine
We just hope the feds take a bribe
Only one gon' walk away when we collide
Twenty thousand dollars, fuckin' mine
Ten bitches came with Dolla, they all dimes
They offered blowjobs and I applied
They all starvin', order them some fries
Then I lick the breast, then the thighs

[Chorus]
Bitch, don't play with me, you know I'm—
Boy, don't play with me, you know I'm fried

[Verse 4]
Ooh, swervin' in the Lamb' off the lot
Five percent the tint with no top
They love me in my city like I'm Pac
Remember when we used to window shop?
Now I just whipped the Porsche to the malls
Ye copped me the chain with the cross
Had to throw some hundos in the wash
Baby, take a seat and take it off
So much ice on me, I can't defrost
Where them at that was sayin' I fell off?

[Chorus]
Boy, don't play with me, you know I—
Boy, don't play with me, you know I'm fried

[Outro]
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh

Trivia[]

  • This is the third song Kanye released with a beat built around The Hooligans, the other two being "CARNIVAL" and "LIKE THAT REMIX".
  • The song heavily interpolated "CARNIVAL", likely as an attempt to recreate the song's success.
    • Coincidentally, the song, like "CARNIVAL", had also initially been owned by Rich The Kid and given to Kanye.
