"FUK SUMN" is a song by ¥$ (Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign) that was released as the tenth track from their debut studio album, VULTURES 1, on February 10, 2024.[1] The song features vocals from Playboi Carti and Travis Scott.[2]
Production[]
The song's intro samples Koopsta Knicca's 1994 song, "Smoking on a Junt". The beat also samples Secession Studios' 2017 song, "One Hundred Strings". The drums on Ye's verse sample Tony Joe White's 1970 song, "Stud-Spider".[3]
Lawsuit[]
In November 2024, TMZ reported that Criminal Manne, DJ Squeeky, and the estate of Kilo G had filed a lawsuit for copyright infringement due to Ye and Ty sampling their song, "Drank a Yak (Part 2)", on "FUK SUMN". They claimed that they attempted sample clearance negotiations after the song's release, but the negotiations were stalled out in June due to Yeezy's restructuring of employees.[4]
Background[]
The song which had initially been titled "Smoking On Junt" after its sample was made by Ty Dolla $ign some time in 2023 which had been intended for his album Beach House 4 and had a feature from Juicy J.[5] The song was presumably shown to Kanye during the Italy sessions when Ty was still in ownership of the song, though the song was ultimately one of the many taken up for their collaborative album Bad Bitch Play Book.
The song was first worked on on October 4th with a reference from Bump J, though like most Kanye songs it is likely a rough freestyle for the song from Kanye himself predates this.[6] Prior to this version however existed a reference done by Ojivolta label artist Lawson prior to the song's retitle which has been speculated to have been intended to have been AI'd by Carti who had not recorded his verse for the song at the time. Lawson was also said to have recorded two other references for VULTURES-era songs.[7]
Between this date and the 7th, Playboi Carti would also record his verse for the song (likely with the extra vocals seen in the October 7th copy of the song), and Quavo would record his reference verse for the song on the 7th.[8]
On November 15, a snippet of the song titled "Fuck Sum" was leaked solely with Carti and Quavo's vocals.[2] The song was at first speculated to be intended for Carti's album I AM MUSIC, though it was later revealed that Ty Dolla $ign had also recorded for the song, leading many to believe the song had been for his and Kanye's joint album. The rumors had later been confirmed when Ty posted the first VULTURES 1 tentative track list on December 8, featuring "FUK SUMN" as the third track.[9]
According to producer Hubi, the beat for "FUK SUMN" was created during a Discord call at 4:00 AM, taking him 4 hours to complete. He described the process as "messy, [but] enjoyable". Later, Timbaland got a hold of the song and showed it to Ye, who loved it.[10] On December 10, 2023, Kanye first previewed the song at a restaurant in Miami.[11]
On December 15, during the Vultures City event in Las Vegas after the second official VULTURES listening party, the song was officially previewed in full length for the first time, Kanye seemingly beginning to embrace the Quavo verse as a standalone feature instead of just a reference as it had initially been intended to be.[12]
Going into 2024, Quentin Miller would record a reference for the song. On January 14, Kanye, Carti and Ty would all seemingly begin to start filming for a music video.[13] The version of the song seemingly featured new production from JPEGMAFIA, the lack of Traxster's strings during the beat switch into Kanye's verse, as well as a longer Kanye verse. Travis Scott would also meet up with Kanye some time mid-January where he would not only record a feature verse for the song that was used in the final cut but also a reference that Kanye would record.[14]
The song in its final form was first played at the Chicago and New York listening parties for VULTURES 1, before being met with a final release on February 10.
Remix[]
On February 23, JPEGMAFIA teased a potential remix of "FUK SUMN" with Quavo's verse readded.[15] It was again previewed at JPEGMAFIA's show in Mexico on March 7. In response, Quavo would later go on Instagram to tell Ye and Ty to "give the fans what they want" on Instagram.[16]Ye and Ty played this version of the song at the Phoenix LP on March 10 and at the Rolling Loud festival.[17] However, according to Alek, all the planned remixes to "BACK TO ME", "DO IT" and FUK SUMN itself had been scrapped.[18]
The song would be worked on up until March 18 when Ant Clemons would partially record vocals for Kanye's bridge.[19] The song was intended to release alongside VULTURES 2 although past its missed date had been thrown away. Despite this, the remix of the song has been played in place of the official release at every VULTURES listening party past initial release.
Music video[]
On January 14, 2024, a video was posted of Ye filming a music video for the song.[20] Insider Alek stated that the music video was finished, but it was scrapped because Travis Scott had not yet recorded his verse, so he wasn't in the video.[21]
