Production

The song samples "Stop, Look, Listen (to Your Heart) by Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye.

Background

The earliest known freestyle version of "God Level" was created on January 7, 2014. From there, several people recorded reference tracks for the song, including Livvi Franc, Sam Dew, BOOTS, and Andrea Martin. In April, CyHi the Prynce recorded his reference track for the song. Rihanna also recorded vocals for the bridge that were later removed. The latest known version of "God Level" from the Yeezus II era (dated May 22, 2014) was also one of the earliest leaked versions of the song, having been leaked in July of 2019. On May 24, the song was first previewed in an Adidas FIFA World Cup advertisement titled "The Dream". In July 2014, the song was played at a private listening party for Yeezus II in Café Royal.

After Yeezus II morphed into So Help Me God, however, the song was rarely worked on. It was seen in a SHMG-era tracklist that was presumably made around the fall of 2014. In a list of Post Malone reference tracks, one of the songs listed was titled "Do You Really Ever Love", which is theorized to be a nickname for "God Level". The baseline from the older "God Level" tracks, produced by Noah Goldstein, is believed to have been reused for a track by Rosalia titled "SAOKO".
