"Hot Shit" (alternatively known as "Hot S**t") is a single by Bronx rapper Cardi B that features additional verses from Chicago rappers Kanye West (under the name Ye) and Lil Durk.[1] The song was met with a release on July 1st, 2022 and was intended to be the lead single to Cardi's second studio album, though it is unlikely the song and the album are connected now due to the events that unfolded past the single's release.[2] The song features production done by Tay Keith and BanBwoi.
On the same day of release, both an instrumental and a Cardi-only version of the song was released as additional content.
Production[]
The song is produced by Tay Keith and BanBwoi and features a brief vocal sample of "Electric Boogie" by Marcia Griffiths.[3]
Background[]
Though releasing in 2022, the song dates back far earlier and was actually recorded in 2019 as a solo song.[4] The song was worked on throughout 2020, though Cardi wouldn't get Ye or Durk to record until months before release. Ye would be sent the song during the Pio Pico Art Gallery sessions for his album Donda though wouldn't record and send Carti a finished until after the release of the album with writing help from Rhymefest.[5]
About six months before the song's release, there were reports that Kanye was set to film a music video with Cardi B at Balenciaga's Miami store, but that did not actually happen.[6] "Hot Shit" was first announced in a commercial break during the 2022 BET Awards,[7] the same show that Kanye gave a rare speech in support of a lifetime award for Sean Combs. The song's cover art and features were later announced on June 26.[2]
Cardi B has said that the song is older than her 2020 hit "WAP,'"[8] placing 2019 as an estimate in a Zane Lowe interview. She also said that Ye gave her the verse "a couple of months ago when he was just all over the media," all while speaking positively of working with him.[9][10] Kanye's verse contains a mention of recently-deceased fashion designer Virgil Abloh and Cardi B's sister Hennessy ("Henny") Carolina.[11]
Feud[]
Ye's decision to appear on a Cardi B track seemed to ignite a beef with Nicki Minaj, who interrupted a subsequent performance of "Monster" to say "I'm 'Monster'-ed out, and we don't f--k with clowns."[12][13] Ye would go on to quietly unfollow Nicki on Instagram on July 11.[14]

A music video for the song premiered on YouTube on July 12 at 8pm EDT. Ye appeared in an all black outfit with his signature skin-tight mask that he has been donning in music videos throughout the year.[15]
