"I Am A God" is the third track from Kanye West's sixth studio album, Yeezus (2013).[1] The outro features uncredited vocals from Justin Vernon.[2] God is also credited as a feature.[3]

In the song, Kanye infamously calls himself a god, telling people to "quit playing with God".[2]

Production[]

The song samples audio from Capleton's 2001 song, "Forward Inna Dem Clothes". Capleton was given writing credits for the song because of the sample.[4]

Background[]

In an interview with W Magazine, Kanye revealed that the song was written as a result of something that happened to him in the fall of 2012. A few days before Paris Fashion Week, Kanye was informed that he was invited to a runway show, but on the condition that he couldn't attend any other shows. The next day, Kanye went to the studio with Daft Punk and wrote the song. He stated: "Nobody can tell me where I can and can’t go. Man, I’m the No. 1 living and breathing rock star. I am Axl Rose; I am Jim Morrison; I am Jimi Hendrix.”[2][5] Several versions of the song that were made during the Thank God For Drugs era features more prominent drums.[6] Travis Scott reused the drums from the demo versions of the song in his UTOPIA song, "MODERN JAM".[7]

The song was first previewed at the Met Gala in New York on May 6, 2013. On June 9, it was again previewed at the Governors Ball.[2]

Live performances[]

The song was performed during The Yeezus Tour as the ninth track on the setlist.[8]

Lyrics[]

[Intro]
Blazin', mi don't want dem
Mi need dem
Blazin
Suh mi tek har outta bugah red and put her in a tall skirt
And now she find out what life is really worth
No to X rated
Yo mi tek har outta bugah red and put her in a tall skirt
And now she find out what life is really worth
No to X rated
I am a God
I am a God
I am a God

[Chorus]
I am a God
Hurry up with my damn massage
Hurry up with my damn ménage
Get the Porsche out the damn garage
I am a God
Even though I'm a man of God
My whole life in the hand of God
So y'all better quit playin' with God

[Verse 1]
Soon as they like you make 'em unlike you
'Cause kissin' people ass is so unlike you
The only rapper compared to Michael
So here's a few hatin'-ass n***as to fight you
And here's a few snake-ass n***as to bite you
And I don't even wanna hear 'bout what n***as might do
Old n***as mentally still in high school
Since the tight jeans they ain't never liked you
Pink-ass polos with a fuckin' backpack
But everybody know you brought real rap back
Nobody had swag, man, we the Rat Pack
Virgil, Pyrex, Don C snapback
Ibn diamond, Chi-town shinin'
Monop' in this bitch again, changed the climate
Hop in this bitch to give Saint the garment
Until the day I get struck by lightning

[Chorus]
I am a God
So hurry up with my damn massage
In a French-ass restaurant
Hurry up with my damn croissants
I am a God
I am a God
I am a God

[Refrain]
Ahh!
Ahh!

[Verse 2]
I just talked to Jesus
He said, "What up, Yeezus?"
I said, "Shit—I'm chillin'
Tryna stack these millions"
I know he the most high
But I am a close high
Mi casa, su casa
That's our cosa nostra
I am a God
I am a God
I am a God

[Refrain]
Ahh!
Ahh!
Ahh!
Ahh!

[Outro]
Ain't no way I'm givin' up, I'm a God
