KIDS SEE GHOSTS (stylized in all caps) is the debut studio album by the group KIDS SEE GHOSTS, which comprises of Kanye West and Kid Cudi. The album was released on June 8, 2018, through Wicked Awesome Records and GOOD Music and distributed by Def Jam Recordings. As the third release of the weekly albums of that summer, the album continues the trend of having only seven tracks.[1]
The album's subject matter centers around mental health and overcoming past hurdles in life, which is most clear in the tracks "Reborn" and "Freeee." Featured artists on the album include Pusha T, Yasiin Bey, and Ty Dolla $ign, while production comes from artists such as Mike Dean and Dot da Genius. The album's sound has been described as psychedelic. KSG's cover art was also done by Takashi Murakami, the same visionary behind the artwork for Graduation.[1]
Background[]
Kid Cudi and Kanye West had been collaborating over the years since 2008, when the former was featured on "Welcome to Heartbreak" from the album 808s & Heartbreak. Outdated vocals recorded by Kid Cudi were used in "Guilt Trip" from Yeezus (2013) which sparked some pushback from Cudi. Cudi was again featured on the tracks "Father Stretch My Hands, Pt. 1" and "Waves" from The Life of Pablo (2016). He was also set to appear on the scrapped album Turbo Grafx 16, being pictured with West, Mike Dean, and Plain Pat during the recording process.[2][3]
Their friendship hit the rocks when Cudi criticized West and Drake for using writers in September 2016.[4] Kanye responded to the tweets at the Tampa stop of his Saint Pablo Tour, threatening Cudi not to mention his name again and assuring "I birthed you," before adding that he felt "hurt" and "disrespected." Just days later, Ye retracted his earlier comments, describing Cudi as his "brother" and "the most influential artist of the past ten years." In November 2016, Kanye and Cudi officially ended their rivalry as they hugged onstage during the Saint Pablo Tour in Sacramento. He later called Cudi the greatest of all rappers during his infamous rant.[5]
On December 30, 2016, rumors began spreading about a possible collaborative album between Ye and Cudi after a snippet of a song was leaked.[6] On August 11, 2017, Japanese painter Takashi Murakami shared a picture with Kanye and Cudi, thanking them for visiting his studio. An anonymous source later stated that the duo were working on a collaborative album in Japan, which was set to release "out of the blue".[7] In March 2018, Cudi was seen arriving to Wyoming with Nas to work on new projects.[8] On April 19, Ye revealed that he and Cudi formed a new group titled KIDS SEE GHOSTS and their album was set to release on June 8.[9] Two days later, Ye revealed an early cover for the album.[10] On May 15, Ye posted an early track list for KIDS SEE GHOSTS, revealing that the album was set to be 7 tracks long.[11] On June 1, Ye posted an updated track list for the album, which didn't change much aside from removing "Ghost Town".[12] On June 8, a listening party was held in Santa Clarita, California with the album releasing later that day.[13]
Cover art[]
The official cover art for KIDS SEE GHOSTS was revealed by Kid Cudi on June 6, 2018, two days before the album's release. It was designed by Takashi Murakami, who also created the cover art for Ye's third studio album, Graduation (2007), and directed the music video for "Good Morning".[1] In the cover art, a ghost-like figure rides a bigger ghost as trees and mountains can be seen in the background. The big ghost was also seen in the music video for "Good Morning". The mountainous background was inspired by Hokusai's series of paintings, titled Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.
On April 21, Ye revealed an early version of the cover art, which featured Ye and Cudi alongside the ghost with English and Japanese writing that read "KIDS SEE GHOSTS".[10]
