Montero Lamar Hill (born April 9, 1999), better known by his stage name Lil Nas X, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter.[1] He rose to prominence with the release of his 2019 country rap single "Old Town Road," the longest-running number-one song (at 19 weeks) since the U.S. Billboard Hot 100's 1958 inception.[2] Simultaneously, he came out as gay, the only artist to do so while having a number-one record.[3]
Known for his queer visuals and social media presence,[4] Lil Nas X has received numerous accolades, including two Grammy Awards, five Billboard Music Awards, five MTV Video Music Awards, two BET Hip Hop Awards, two iHeartRadio Music Awards and two American Music Awards. "Old Town Road" ranks as the second highest-certified song in the United States—with 17 platinum certifications.[5] He was placed on Forbes' 30 Under 30 in 2020, and Time named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world the following year.[6] He became the youngest honoree in the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2022 upon receiving the Hal David Starlight Award in May of that year.[7]
History (w/ Kanye West)[]
Kanye West would approach Lil Nas X and producer Take A Daytrip after his song "Old Town Road" blown up, Kanye would approach Nas, stating he reminded him of his prime era. He asked Nas to show him some of the songs he had been working on and was shown "INDUSTRY BABY". Impressed, West decided to add production to the song as it had reminded him of his own song "All Of The Lights".[8]
Nas would also work with West on his own album of the time, Donda and had recorded several reference tracks for the song "Remote Control" with Take A Daytrip and has been said to have recorded more, although it's unclear what else he had recorded for.[9] His song "Guess U Get What U Want" was initially thought to be a reference for Ye, though was later debunked to be false.
In 2022, a tour version of his song "SUN GOES DOWN" was played during his "MONTERO FEST" tour which had featured an instrumental sample of "Runaway".[10] On February 22nd of that year, Jack Harlow would also record a longer verse for Kanye's song "Louie Bags" where he states "Lil Nas X would probably fuck him if he let him".[11]
