Low Lights (also stylized as Lowlights) is the sixth track from Kanye West's seventh studio album, The Life of Pablo (2016). It is a minimalist track that consists of spoken word by Kelly Price over a sample of "So Alive" by Kings of Tomorrow.[1][2][3]

The track leads into "Highlights." "Low Lights" features production by Ye, DJDS, and Mike Dean.

Background[]

Production duo DJDS (who are credited as both producers and writers) said that Kanye's team basically just reached out to them through Facebook and Twitter DMs, saying that "Kanye West requests your presence tomorrow." After that, they worked with Ye for three consecutive weeks, during which they got to understand the gospel aspects that Ye wanted on the project.[4]

It was also revealed in an interview that all the songs from TLOP were being worked on at the same time and there "wasn't really a systematic way" going about finishing them. The duo also said that they are inspired by Ye himself, particularly likening their sampling style to his "older production."[4]

Ye said that he thought of "all the moms driving they kids to school then going to work" when he put the song on the album.[5]

It has been noted that "light" is a prominent word used in track titles throughout Ye's discography: "Flashing Lights," "Street Lights," "All of the Lights," "Ultralight Beam," and "Highlights" all contain the word, along with this one of course.[6]

Alicia Keys sampled the track's monologue in her 2017 song "That's What's Up" from her album Here (2018).[7]
