MELROSE SAY IT Remix

"MELROSE" (also known as "Touch My"[1]) is a song by Kanye West that was released as the eleventh and final track to his demo studio album, BULLY V1.[2] The song features additional verses from collaborators Ty Dolla $ign and Playboi Carti as well as production from Ojivolta and TheLabCook, differing from the rest of the album that features sole production from himself.[3]

Production[]

The song is produced by Ojivolta and TheLabCook and features Romare's "Pusherman"[4] playing throughout the song that is the same sample featured in the unreleased song "Codeine". The song runs at a tempo of 122 BPM in The Eb key with a major mode and is played in 4/4 time.

Background[]

The song, initially titled "t h r a s h e r", was created the first week of February, prior to the release of VULTURES 1. It's unclear if the song at this point in time was just a beat or a rough freestyle.[5]

"Melrose" was first previewed at the private VULTURES 2 listening party in Los Angeles.[6] Many people believed that the song was a reworked version of "Codeine" because both songs contain the same sample. However, Luit confirmed that "Melrose" and "Codeine" were two different songs entirely.[7]

On July 7, a high-quality snippet of the song was leaked.[8] Thanks to a group-buy held by Playboi Carti fans, two versions of the song were successfully leaked on July 10. The first version was made on February 20, 2024 and has a length of 5:29, and the second version was made on March 8, 2024 and has a length of 3:20. The second aforementioned version contains the "Codeine" sample[9], while the first one doesn't.[10]

On Jan 22, 2025 a version of Melrose was leaked with a different mix and a Quavo feature. [11] Though Quavo's verse would end up being a throwaway, Ty would interpolate part of his verse on the BULLY version's chorus.

According to Rodri, Till Lindermann, the lead vocalist of German band Rammstein, recorded two reference tracks for the song in late April and early May.[12] The song was likely scrapped afterwards.

The song was speculated to have been intended for Carti's own album MUSIC at some point in time as lyrics to the song were spotted on a concept cover to the album that Carti had shared on his Instagram page and Carti associate Burberry Erry would play a snippet of the song on his Instagram.[13][14] The song was later confirmed by members of the Carti community to have been intended for MUSIC though was entirely made solo and was intended to release on the final album, though was cut off last minute. Other members have said this is a lie, making whether this is fact or not unclear, as Ye was also seemingly still using the song for his album BULLY, the song having made an appearance as the closing track to the latest copy of the album made in December 2024.

On March 18, 2025, Ye released a visual film for BULLY, which featured "MELROSE" as the final track. However on the version released to YouTube, the song had been cut and the portion where "MELROSE" had been placed before had just featured a slowed version of the previous song, likely as a result as the grudge Kanye had held against Carti for cutting him off of "WE NEED ALL DA VIBES" on his album MUSIC.[15] Ye himself would later take to X (fka Twitter) to state he only released it because he was going to redo the entire album due to his newfound disdain towards AI technology.[16]

Ye himself would later confirm he was considering scrapping the song due to him now feuding with both of the artists featured on it, though due to intervention by Ye fanpage "yeunreleased" he would settle on instead recording for a solo version for the final version of the BULLY album.

Since this release, the Tweet containing the link to the demo album has been taken down as a result of a legal dispute between Ye and Pomme as Ye never cleared the sample for "HIGHS AND LOWS". Kanye has shown interest in trying to settle things with Carti, though according to Digital Nas Playboi Carti has no plans on making up with Ye.[17] Also according to Digital Nas, Ty has been dodging Ye as well following Ye feuding with him.[18]

In May of that same year, it would be confirmed via snippet that Ty Dolla $ign had taken the song for his own after feuding with Ye, completely reworking it and turning it into the song "Touch My" for his then-upcoming album, T Y C O O N.[19] The beat had been completely reworked and used the full Carti verse. It has been speculated however that the song is actually completely separate from "MELROSE" and only reuses the Carti verse. Though on the released version, it went by "SAY IT" and did not feature vocals from Playboi Carti.

[Verse 1: Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign]
Mama told me hella times
"Never trust a strobelite"
They break all, break all law
They can't keep us down
Do you believe in the light? Do you believe in the light?
This kind of fight? This kind of night?
This kind of night? This kind of night?
This kind of fight? This kind of Christ?

[Chorus: Kanye West, Ty Dolla $ign & Playboi Carti]
Now you got me back on Melrose
Just spent a hundred racks tryna get home (Puss')
She tryna double back to Rodeo (Puss')
She tellin' me I'm too ghetto

[Verse 2: Playboi Carti]
Uh, way too much smoke, I need more ammo (Phew, phew)
Rock star from the hood, I got a gun and a rose
We done took off with a couple hoes, I'm tryna line some more
And I almost took her home, but she start a lot of smoke
Uh, every day I'm just him, every day she wanna scheme
She wanna borrow my jet, she wanna be on my team
Kiss on me like menthol, I'm tryna bust in her mouth
Tell 'em bring the bags to the house, but we can't go to the mall

[Chorus: Kanye West, Ty Dolla $ign & Playboi Carti]
Now you got me back on Melrose
Spent a hundred racks tryna get home
She tryna double back to Rodeo
To tellin' me I'm too ghetto
Now you got me back on Melrose
Spent a hundred racks tryna get home (Puss')
She tryna double back to Rodeo (Puss', puss')
She tellin' me I'm too ghetto (Puss')

[Verse 3: Ty Dolla $ign]
Mama told me watch them girls (Ooh yeah, ooh yeah)
They playin' independent, I know she gon' spend it
Say that pussy mine even if that pussy rented
I'm not the first junkie, I know somebody done rid it
She not innocent, but I'm into it
Say she love me, I don't believe her, but I love the sentiment
They say that I done copped a fever, I been fuckin' a foreign bitch
And I'm foreign, bitch
Still keep a couple hoes on the block (Uh)
First time seen a trunk in the front
Rock star, we ain't never no punks (Uh)
Stadiums, we done sold out a bunch (Uh)
Actress eat this dick up for lunch (Uh)
New ass, ain't did a squat or a crunch
Melrose, yeah, before I could turn home (Uh)

[Chorus: Kanye West, Ty Dolla $ign & Playboi Carti]
Now you got me back on Melrose

Now you got me back on Melrose (Puss', puss', uh)
Spent a hundred racks tryna get home (Puss')
She tryna double back to Rodeo (Puss', puss')
She tellin' me I'm too ghetto (Puss')

Trivia[]

  • Excluding the AI references as this would mean EVERY track would have a feature, this is the only song off of the demo version of BULLY to have any features.
  • Oddly enough, Carti's verse is cut just several bars before a line where he threatens to shoot Nazis. It's unclear if this is purposeful, though given Ye's stance on the Jewish community it would not be far-fetched to believe so.
