"Never Forgive Yourself / Yeah I Know" (also known by the names Candyland and Worst Mistake) is an unreleased throwaway for Kanye West's 2022 album Donda 2.[1] It features backing reference vocals from common collaborator Dem Jointz.
Production[]
The drums on the second half of the song "Yeah I Know" are the same drums used on K.A.A.N.'s released song "Emergency".[2] The song samples the song "We Come 1" by Faithless.[3]
Background[]
The song was initially teased by collaborator JAYLIEN on February 1st when he posted a video of Kanye working on the song.[4] This version of the song was a rough mumble freestyle and featured alternate production done by BoogzDaBeast and Boi-1da.[5] This freestyle dates back to January 30th, just two days before being previewed by JAYLIEN.
On February 7th, a new, completely reworked version of the song was made by Dem Jointz, featuring chopped up Kanye vocals from the initial freestyle and Dem Jointz reference punch-ins.[6] The song was split into two parts and contained a beat switch into both, "Never Forgive Yourself" and "Yeah I Know". This concept would be kept until 4 days later.
On February 11th, the song was reverted back to "Worst Mistake" and had newly added Beach House production instead of the production done by Boi-1da.[7] Dem Jointz' punch-ins had been removed, once again stripping the song back to its initial freestyle.
The song went back-and-forth between the initial "Never Forgive Yourself / Yeah I Know" concept and the "Worst Mistake" concept throughout the next few sessions. Production from Digital Nas and Fya Man among others were added.[8] Kanye writers CyHi and Courtlin Jabrae recorded a reference for the song on February 15th and Fat Money recorded two for both versions of the song presumably before theirs.[9] Shenseea had recorded a feature for the song that was intended to be an outro for the song on February 16th.[10]
The last known version of the song was made on March 3rd and was titled "Candyland". The song was an Albe Back reference and features 1 and a half minutes of vocals over the BoogzDaBeast and Boi-1da beat.[11]
