"No Rules" (also known as "Black Skinhead Remix" and "Everybody Wants To Rule The World") is an unreleased song that was created by Kanye West and given to 88-Keys for his unreleased 2019 album.[1] The song features vocals from Miley Cyrus on the chorus as well as Travis Scott on earlier versions and features production from 88-Keys.

Production[]

Earlier versions of the song featured a vocal sample of Tears For Fears' 1985 song "Everybody Wants To Rule The World", but was later replaced with a cover done by Miley Cyrus, likely for sample clearance issues.[2] The song runs at a tempo of 76 BPM in the E key with a mode of minor.[3]

Background[]

The song "Black Skinhead" was met with an official release as the second track of Yeezus on June 18, 2013.[4] It's unclear when the remix was made as it could have initially been worked on prior to the song's release similar to the DJ Mano remix or after the song's release.

Production on the song would inevitably be paused between its initial creation and further versions as Kanye West would later meet with singer Miley Cyrus on August 25th where the two would skip the afterparty for the 2013 MTV Music Video Awards so that Miley could record her vocals for the remix.[5] It's likely Travis Scott had also been present during these sessions as there is no known version to feature only Miley Cyrus (excluding the song's final version).[6]

The sound would continue to be treated as a remix to Black Skinhead up until October 18. On the 18th, the song was taken and completely reworked, making it its own standalone song titled "Everybody Wants To Rule The World".[7] On November 8th, Kanye would record his first freestyle for the song and on January 10th of 2014 the production would be entirely redone.[8]

The song would shortly be carried into the So Help Me God sessions in 2014 as KIRBY would record a reference for the song on July 20, though shortly after that the song had been scrapped and would not be worked on again for years.[9]

In 2019, Kanye would give his head producer 88-Keys the song as well as another So Help Me God-era song "Star Time" for his own solo album.[10] The song was entirely reworked with new production from 88-Keys and both Kanye and Travis Scott had been cut out. The song was intended to be the first track to the album although was scrapped alongside the rest of 88-Keys' album.

Lyrics[]

[Intro: Miley Cyrus]
Welcome to your life
Diamond through the light
This Miami vice
It's that life (Okay, okay, yeah, yeah)
Dodging bullets in the air when (Okay, okay)
There's cameras everywhere, yeah
You don't know how to act right
Everybody wants to rule the world

[Verse 1: 88-Keys & Miley Cyrus]
Sure, I cast my vote for either Henny or Harambe (yeah)
And now there's Mexican kids without their mommy stuck (oh-oh)
At the border, I'm more to find out the price
Throwing high on that up-and-up, first real props
And that should sum me up
My first girl probably got her tummy tucked
And now she selling tummy flat tea and waist trainers (yeah)
Some white people wearing brownface stainers
Whose around the boys in blue who feel like they some ape trainers
And it's rather safe to say that they'd rather remain nameless
I could give a f--- about them as long as I remain famous
So don't ask me no questions, questionin' my conscience
Respond and you'll get blocked from my comments
This is my world

[Chorus: Miley Cyrus]
Actin' on your worst behavior
Turn your back on all your haters
Everybody wants to rule the-
Everybody wants to rule the-
Everybody wants to rule the world
The world

[Open Verse]

[Chorus: Miley Cyrus]
Actin' on your worst behavior
Turn your back on all your haters
Everybody wants to rule the-
Everybody wants to rule the-
Everybody wants to rule the world
The world
