"PAID" is a song by ¥$ (Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign) that was released as the third track from their debut studio album, VULTURES 1 (2024).[1] The song features uncredited vocals from K-Ci.[2]
Production[]
The beat heavily samples Cajmere's 1992 song, "Brighter Days". The intro samples Jodeci's 1995 song, "Get on Up". Kanye references The Police's 1978 song, "Roxanne", in his verse. The line, "You know why I'm here", is sampled from an interview with Marshawn Lynch in 2015.[3]
Background[]
"PAID" had initially been a Ty Dolla $ign song intended for his own solo album that was created in either 2022 or 2023 and had featured K-Ci.[4] The song was shown to Ye during the Japan sessions. Miami rapper Denzel Curry also potentially recorded a reference for the song at this time as he was seen with them during these sessions, although it is possible the reference was recorded during the Saudi sessions as that is when Denzel and Ant Clemons had recorded a reference for "DEAD" as he stated himself.[5]
The song was seen on most of if not all VULTURES 1 and Bad Bitch Play Book track lists.[6] On December 8, 2023, Ty posted a tentative track list for VULTURES 1, listing the song as the seventh track.[7] It was first previewed at the Miami rave on December 15.[8]
The song continued to get worked on into the Saudi sessions. Ant Clemons stated he worked on the song, likely referring to a reference track he created for the song.[9] On January 31, a new track list for VULTURES 1 was seen on a shirt worn by North West, which revealed that Future was featured on the track.[10] The song was later confirmed to have been recorded for by Future, although his verse was a reference for Ye. Two days later on February 2, HipHopDX posted a newer track list for VULTURES 1, moving the song up to the second track on the album.[11]
It was previewed at the listening parties in Chicago and New York, albeit with different production and Ye's verse first. The song had officially released as a part of VULTURES 1 on February 9, 2024 as the third track of the record.[12]
On March 7, JPEGMAFIA previewed an alternate version of the song with new production from him, presumably a remix of the song as it was previewed alongside the "FUK SUMN" remix with Quavo.[13] This never was released along with the planned "FUK SUMN", "DO IT" and "BACK TO ME" remixes.
