"Remote Control" (also recognized by the name Hovercraft) is a song by Kanye West off of his eleventh studio album Donda (2021).[1] The song serves as the twelfth track of the base record as well as the twenty-second on the deluxe record.[2] The song has a hidden feature from Young Thug and backing vocals from Daniel Davila.[3]
A remix of the song also exists titled "Remote Control pt 2" that released as a part of the deluxe version of Donda as the twelfth track, adding a new verse from Kid Cudi and an extended outro.[4]
The song's purpose is to poke fun at society's technological advancements and how futuristic society has became, while also sticking to the gospel theme of Donda throughout and references God's omnipresent nature "remotely controlling" Earth from up in heaven.[5]
Production[]
The song features a tempo of 110 BPM and is in the E key and a major mode.[6] The outro samples audio from the 2012 video game, Strawinsky and the Mysterious House, in which the Globglogabgalab introduces himself. The audio became a major meme in 2018.[7]
It is theorized that Kanye sampled the meme because of YouTuber videogamedunkey, who played fake leaks from Donda in a livestream. One of the fake leaks was the Globglogabgalab's song.[8]
Background[]
The initial version of the song titled "Ops Block" dates back to the Pio Pico sessions from May 26, 2021. This version of the song is a 12-minute freestyle over one of the 150 beats Digital Nas had sent Kanye.[9] Cailin Russo who was initially confused for rapper Bktherula who stated she had collaborated with Kanye and A$AP Rocky for Donda during this time period.[10]
Two days after the initial freestyle, the song was cut down noticeably to a minute and 30 seconds in order to continue being worked on, now under the title "Hovercraft".[11] The production had also been slightly altered with newly added production from the duo Ojivolta.[12] On the final day of the month, production was also added from 88-Keys.[13]
The following month, the song had been entirely reproduced by Teddy Walton with a beat slightly more resemblant to the final beat.[14] Baby Keem was also said to have recorded a reference presumed to be during this time period and Steve Lacy slightly tweaked the production, before production on the song was put on hold.[15]
The song was picked back up in late-July with newly added Todd Rundgren vocals.[16] Lil Nas X would also record a reference for the song over a brand new beat produced by Take A Daytrip, likely during the same sessions in which Kanye added production to his song "INDUSTRY BABY".[17] 2 Chainz was said to have recorded for the song the same day of the first listening party which was confirmed to have been for a feature.
The track was first previewed at the Atlanta listening party on July 22.[18] At this point in time, the song was solo Kanye and had partial mumble, clearly still in a somewhat unfinished state. After the first listening party on the 23rd, Young Thug would record his verse for the song.[19] Soulja Boy would as well 2 days later on the 25th, though his verse was ultimately cut for Kid Cudi the following month on August 2nd.[20] The song with Cudi's verse was played at both the second and third listening parties for Donda on August 5th and August 26th.[21]
The song was officially released on August 29th on Donda as the twelfth track, although without the Cudi verse which would later be released as a "part 2" on November 14.[22]
Soulja Boy's removal from the song would spark a short-lived feud between the two, with Soulja Boy going on a massive Twitter rant against Kanye on August 30, leaking his own verse to spite him.[23] The following day, Soulja Boy would go on Adin Ross' stream and play his verse in full.[24] This verse was short-lived as Kanye would later reach out to Soulja Boy to make amends and get Soulja Boy on his song "First Time In A Long Time" for his album Donda 2 (2022).[25]
