"SLIDE" (previously titled "Slidin'" and "Slide In") is a song by ¥$ (Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign) that was released as a single on August 2, 2024.[1] It was later released as the opening track on their second studio album, VULTURES 2. The song is produced by Fred again....[2]
Production[]
The song's intro samples the THX Deep Note. Vocals from J.R. Funk and the Love Machine's song, "Feel Good, Party Time" and drums from Omarion's song, "Touch", are also sampled.[3]
Background[]
The song was initially created in early 2023 by Ty Dolla $ign under the title of "Slide In" and is believed to have been intended for Ty's own solo album prior to when he began to work with Kanye on VULTURES. When Ty and Kanye started working together during the Japan sessions, however, the song was handed over to Kanye to record for.
The song was first previewed on September 29, 2023 by Ty Dolla $ign himself who played the song at a club.[4] Four days following this, another snippet but this time longer was played at a different club.[5] On December 8th of that same year, the first official VULTURES 1 track list had been posted by Ty Dolla $ign, which listed "Slide" as the ninth track. It was played at the first listening party in Miami on the 12th and was revealed two days after that the song had been produced by Fred again...[6]
On December 14, another version of the song with an extended outro was premiered on DJ Pharris's album premiere.[2] On December 28, in a video introducing the Yeezy Pods, Slide was heard playing in the background.[7]
On January 31, 2024, a new VULTURES 1 track list had surfaced via a shirt that North West had been wearing, revealing the track list on the back. Slide maintained its place as the 9th track of the record, however it was revealed through this that James Blake was intended to feature on the song.[8]
Despite James Blake being listed as a feature for the song, it's very unlikely he had ever recorded for it. James Blake himself later confirmed that he and Kanye had not spoken in a long while, either meaning James Blake had been intended to feature on the song and never had recorded for it or his vocals had stemmed from another song.
In last minute changes, the track list was completely reworked, removing "Slide"'s position on it. Since then, Slide has been in consideration for VULTURES 2, having been previewed during several listening parties for the album and appeared on the May 3rd track list.[4] Despite the album rework, it was confirmed "Slide" was among the songs from the initial copy to be brought back into consideration for VULTURES 2.
On July 7, 2024, a CD-quality version of "Slide" was leaked along with "River". It is believed to be the same version that was previewed by DJ Pharris on December 14, 2023.[9]
On August 2, 2024, the song finally released for free on the Yeezy website.[1] The following day, it was available on streaming.[10]
Music video[]
The music video for "SLIDE" was released onto Ye's YouTube channel on August 13, 2024.[11] The video features a still moving shot of a street that includes several women wearing little clothes, a tent, trash cans, and cars. It was directed by Ye and Aus Taylor.
