"STARS" (originally titled "In The Stars") is a song by ¥$ (Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign) that was released as the opening track for their debut studio album, VULTURES 1 (2024). The song features uncredited vocals from the Hooligans.

Production

The song heavily samples Dijon's 2019 song, "Good Luck".

Background

The song, initially titled "Up In The Stars" was initially a 3-minute song by Ty Dolla $ign and Mustard featuring DJ Camper that was created January 20 of 2022 and had been intended for a collaborative album between the two. When the album was scrapped, Ty decided to keep the song for his own album Beach House 4 and continued to be used with intent for that album, even appearing on the final Japan track listing as the second track before the album was turned into a collaborative record with Kanye West.

After Ty had shown Kanye the track list to his album to attempt to get him to executively produce the track, the two began work on a collaborative album titled Bad Bitch Play Book and STARS was among the first to be carried over. The beat was entirely redone by FNZ and Ojivolta with a guitar outro and Kanye had recorded a finished take for the song within these sessions. Sean Leon had also recorded a reference track around this time, though whether it was prior to or after Kanye had finished his verse is unclear.

The song appeared on most of the Bad Bitch Play Book track lists and on the notorious 40-track listing as the tenth track. Though the song was not previewed at any of the early Vultures listening parties, it was worked on into 2024 where Quentin Miller and Lucien Parker would record references for the song and the production would be entirely redone, an early version even sampling Kanye's JESUS IS KING song "Use This Gospel".

On February 2, HipHopDX posted a new track list for VULTURES 1, listing "Stars" as the opening track. It was previewed at the listening parties in Chicago and New York, before officially releasing with the rest of the VULTURES 1 album on February 10, 2024.

• A fan remix of this song titled: "STARS (Extended Epic Intro)" by @yoosf has been mistakenly placed in the official VULTURES 1 playlist multiple times. This is most likely due to a glitch.

• "STARS" is one of the only songs to not have been heard in any capacity prior to the listening parties for VULTURES 1 in February, alongside "GOOD (DON'T DIE)".
  • While "KEYS TO MY LIFE", "PROBLEMATIC", "HOODRAT" and "PAPERWORK" were all not heard in full, snippets of the songs had existed prior to their official releases.
