Taylor Alison Swift (born December 13, 1989) is an American singer-songwriter. Her discography spans multiple genres, and her narrative songwriting — often inspired by her personal life — has received critical praise and widespread media coverage.[1]

She had won the award for Best Female Video at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards when Kanye West abruptly interrupted her speech to say that Beyoncé deserved the award instead.[2] The incident attracted widespread attention and sparked a longtime (and still ongoing) feud between the two artists.

Background[]

Taylor Swift was giving her Best Female Video acceptance speech for her video "You Belong with Me" when Kanye West got on stage and took the microphone from her. He proceeded to say[2]:

Yo, Taylor, I'm really happy for you, I'mma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time!

Ye was referring to the music video for Beyoncé's track "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" as the live audience booed. He proceeded to hand the microphone back to swift, flip off the crowd, and walk off the stage. He was subsequently removed from the show.[3][4]

Later on in the show, Beyoncé went on to win the big award for Video of the Year for the same music video, but cut her speech short to allow Taylor Swift to finish her own speech.[5]

Kanye would later apologize, only to take back his apologies afterward. Regardless, the tension between the two artists subsided as they went on to have successful careers, all until Kanye released his seventh studio album, The Life of Pablo, in 2016. The track "Famous" opens with controversial lines aimed at Taylor Swift:

I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex

Why? I made that bitch famous (Goddamn)

I made that bitch famous

The line attracted media scrutiny, all while Taylor's team claimed that the line was misogynistic and added without Taylor's consent.[6] Kanye's team stated that Ye and Taylor had a phone call where they discussed the line, and Taylor consented to its inclusion.[7][8] Months after release, Ye's wife Kim Kardashian revealed an edited clip of the phone call, which seemingly proved the case in favor of Ye's party.[9]

The music video for "Famous" was also released that summer, containing the fake nude bodies of Taylor Swift and numerous other celebrities in bed with Kanye West.[10]

In 2020, a full clip of the Kanye-Taylor phone call surfaced online, revealing that Ye did not reveal the misogynistic lyrics to Taylor, thus reversing the controversy in Taylor's favor.[11]

Apart from a brief allusion to Taylor (implying she is a snake) in a tweet in summer 2020, Kanye has not mentioned Taylor Swift since.[12] Regardless, the tension between the two artists is still considered active by most.
