The Graduate is a Kanye West-curated mixtape by Mick Boogie, Terry Urban & 9th Wonder. It was released on October 17, 2007, a little over a month after the release of his most popular album, Graduation. Very little is known about this mixtape, and the few versions that still exist are often very low quality or poorly mastered. For a while, the mixtape was chalked up as a fake due to there being many bootleg West mixtapes at the time. Until an old archive of Kanye's blog was found, where he promoted the project.

Background

According to the back cover, the idea for the project is credited to 9th Wonder, Kanye West, GOOD Music, Consequence, A-Trak, Plain Pat, Happy, Wally Sparks, DJ Jon, Big Dho, and Glen Infante. So it's very likely that West and his team reached out to Mick Boogie, Terry Urban & 9th Wonder to make a promotional mixtape.

Artwork

The cover for the project shows an alternate take on Graduation's cover with the Kanye Bear launching in an alternate direction. Now with vinyl records in his hand and a graduation cap on. The term "MTVTN" (short for the tape's distributor LRG&MOTIVATION) replaces the "Universe City" emblem on his varsity jacket. The artwork is not done by Takashi Murakami, though heavily inspired by him.
