"The New Workout Plan" is the eleventh track from Kanye West's debut studio album, The College Dropout (2004).[1] The song was released as a single on August 31, 2004, serving as the fifth and final single from the album.[2] It features uncredited vocals from Bosko and GLC.[3]
The song satirizes the social pressure that men put on women, which many critics praised the song for.[4][5]
A live performance of the track at the Paradiso in Amsterdam was released as a single in 2004.[6] A remix of the song was included in The College Dropout Video Anthology, which was produced by Lil Jon and featured verses from Twista, Luke, and Fonzworth Bentley.[7] An orchestral version of the song, titled "Workout Plan", was featured on Kanye's live album, Late Orchestration (2006).[8]
Background[]
Originally, the song was made for Miri Ben-Ari, with Kanye only being a feature on the song. JB Marshall also recalls an early version of the song having "louder drums" and sounding "more [like a] hip-hop record".[9]
Music video[]
The official music video was directed by Little X, both short and long versions of the video for the song were officially released in 2004. The video features West in a faux 1980s-era workout video as he instructs women how to transform themselves into housewives. Cameo appearances include John Legend, Miri Ben-Ari, Anna Nicole Smith, Fonzworth Bentley, Tracee Ellis Ross, Vida Guerra and GLC. Anna Nicole Smith's cameo sees her playing the role of Ella-May and having a star like her frequently featured in a video of West's went against the idea of so many at the time that he'd fail as a rapper.
Lyrics[]
[Intro]
You just popped in the Kanye West
"Get Right For The Summer" workout tape
And ladies, if you follow these instructions exactly
You might be able to pull you a rapper, a NBA player
Man, at least a dude with a car
So first of all, we gonna work on the stomach
Nobody wants a little tight ass
[Verse 1]
One and two and three and four and get them sit ups right and
Tuck your tummy tight and do your crunches like this
Give head, stop, breathe, get up, check your weave
Don't drop the blunt and disrespect the weed
Pick up your son, don't disrespect your seed
It's a party tonight and, ooh, she's so excited
Tell me who's invited, you, your friends and my dick (ah)
What's scary to me
Henny makes girls look like Halle Berry to me
So excuse me miss, I forgot your name
Thank you, God bless you, good night, I came
I came, I came
[Chorus]
It's been a week without me
And she feel weak without me
She wanna talk it out, but
Ain't nothing to talk about
Unless she talkin' about freaking out
Then maybe we can work it out, work it out (c'mon, c'mon)
Work it out, work it out, work it out now (c'mon, c'mon)
Maybe we can work it out (c'mon, c'mon)
[Verse 2]
Ooh, girl your silhouette make me wanna light a cigarette
My name Kanye from the Jigga set
Twista said, "Get It Wet"
Ooh, girl, your breath is harsh
Cover your mouth up like you got SARS
Off them tracks, yeah, I bought them cars
Still kill a n***a on sixteen bars
We ain't sweating to the oldies
We juking to a cold beat
Maybe one day, girl, we can bone
So you can brag to all your homies now (yeah)
But I still mess with a big girl
If you ain't fit girl, I'll still hit girl
One and you brought two friends
Okay, three more, now hop in the Benz
Four door, do you know the difference between a five, six, seven, eight?
All the mocha lattes you gotta do Pilates
You gotta pop this tape in 'fore you start back dating
Hustlers, gangstas, all us ballers
[Chorus]
It's been a week without me
And she feel weak without me
She wanna talk it out, but
Ain't nothing to talk about
Unless she's talkin' about freaking out
Then maybe we can work it out, work it out (c'mon, c'mon)
Work it out, work it out, work it out now (c'mon, c'mon) (hi, my name is Jill)
Maybe we can work it out (c'mon, c'mon) (I just wanna say)
[Interlude 1]

I was able to pull a NBA player
And like now, I shop every day on Rodeo Drive
I just want to say, thank you Kanye, woo, woo, woo, woo, woo, woo
[Interlude 2]
My name is Lasandra, and I just wanted to say
Since listening to Kanye's workout tape
I was able to get my phone bill paid, I got sounds and 13s

And what's most importantly
Is that I ain't gotta fuck with Ray-Ray broke ass no mo'
[Interlude 3]

And I just want to say since listening to Kanye's workout tape
I been able to date outside the family, I got a double wide
And I rode a plane, rode a plane, rode a plane, rode a plane, rode a plane
[Interlude 5]
(Woo) thanks to Kanye's workout plan
I'm the envy of all my friends
See I pulled me a baller man (yeah)
And I ain't gotta work at the mall again

[Refrain]
That's right, put in work, move your ass, go berserk (uh, okay)
Eat your salad, no dessert

It's Kanye's workout plan (allow myself to introduce myself)
His workout plan (this time around, I want y'all to clap with me like this)
[Refrain]
That's right, put in work (uh)
Move your ass, go berserk
Eat your salad, no dessert
Get that man you deserve (uh, and stop)

Move your ass, go berserk (ow)
Eat your salad, no dessert (uh)
Get that man you deserve
[Refrain]
That's right, put in work
Move your ass, go berserk
Eat your salad, no dessert
Get that man you deserve (you hear 'em, uh)
[Refrain]
That's right, put in work
Move your ass, go berserk
Eat your salad, no dessert
Get that man you deserve (woo)
[Outro]
Okay, okay, okay, that's very good (whoa yeah, whoa yeah)
Whoa yeah, whoa, whoa, whoa yeah
I appreciate your time
Whoa yeah, I want to see you work out for me
Whoa, yeah
That felt good, good
It's good, it's good (yo)
[Verse 1]
You just popped in the Lil Jon remix of "The Workout Plan", and
And five, four, three, two, one
And here come the five to the seven and six
I dropped out of college, I can't count worth shit
When the album dropped I was dissing this
Now everybody know this the shit
Part 2, this the update
First rule, stay away from them cupcakes
The second rule is so underrated
They claim that the song was so degradin'
But shit it's still my favorite
And he ain't talkin' 'bout me though
Hello, then who I'm talking about, people?
Okay, whatever you want to believe though
And I even took my own advice
This gut ain't nothing these hoes'll like
I said, I look like LL
Took my shirt off, she claimed, "I can't tell"
But never say I can't sell
Pat, where we at right now, three mil'?
Who the best? (Who the best now?)
Okay leave me out of it
Tell me who the rest now? (Tell me who the rest now?)
Who the rest now?
[Chorus]
It's been a week without me
And she feel weak without me
She wanna talk it out but
Ain't nothin' to talk about
Unless, she talkin' about freakin' out
Then maybe we can work it out
Work it out (work it out, work it out, work it out)
Work it out (work it out, work it out, work it out)
Work it out (work it out, work it out, work it out)
Work it out now (c'mon, just work it, girl)
Maybe we can work it out (just work it, girl)
[Bridge]
Ooh girl, your silhouette
Make me wanna light a cigarette
My name Kanye from the Jigga set
Twista said (Twista said)
[Verse 2]
What's up lil' mama? I'ma be fillin' in for the instructor
They call me the Twista, now work that mothafucka
But not too hard, baby you can do what you do
'Cause I like a fat ass, but ain't feelin' the woobie do
So, if you could drop it to the floor gon' do it
So, its crush time, shawty show me you can do so
Now gon' work it, put down the philly steaks
Hit the Tae Bo like five drills from Billy Blanks and
I know you love how your Lexus ride
But let's get there with them legs, gon' flex them thighs
You know want it, gon' testify
Try my new workout plan called "Sex-ercise' (that's real)
[Chorus]
It done been about a day without me
She don't really wanna lay without me

Work it out (work it out, work it out, work it out)
Work it out (work it out, work it out, work it out)
Work it out now (c'mon, just work it, girl)
Maybe we can work it out (just work it, girl)
[Verse 3]
B-E-N-T-L-E-Y
You ain't know, you betta ask somebody
What we gon' do is twerk that body
All day at that fitness party
Lock them doors, don't tell nobody
Gentlemens in the Gentlemen's Club
And hitting them with an interesting dub
It's upside down, that's for the A-Town
What y'all sayin'?
F.j. Bentley caught misbehaving
Yes, I'm the captain and I'm saving, all my money
Yes, I'm just gonna stand and watch you dance from over here
Matter fact pass the Courvoisier
But I will walk you to your car, my dear
Cheers
[Chorus]
It's been a week without me
And she feel weak without me
She wanna talk it out but
Ain't nothin' to talk about
Unless, she talkin' about freakin' out
Then maybe we can work it out
Work it out (work it out, work it out, work it out)
Work it out (work it out, work it out, work it out)
Work it out (work it out, work it out, work it out)
Work it out now (c'mon, just work it, girl)
Maybe we can work it out (just work it, girl)
[Outro]
Just work it, girl
Just work it, girl
Work it out, work it out, girl
Work it out, work it out, girl
Work it out, work it out, girl
Work it out, work it out, girl
Work it out, work it out, girl
Work it out, work it out, girl
Work it out, work it out, girl
