ye is Kanye West's eighth studio album. It was released on June 1, 2018, through GOOD Music and Def Jam Recordings.[1] The album was recorded in the two weeks leading up to release after a controversial TMZ interview the previous month.
The album is a product of the famous Wyoming sessions, so for that reason, contains only seven songs. Ty Dolla $ign, Kid Cudi, 070 Shake, and more are featured in tracks that cover themes such as mental health and family relationships.[2]
Background[]
- Main article: LOVE EVERYONE
Following Kanye's infamous rants during the Saint Pablo Tour and his hospitalization, he and his family moved to a mountain ranch in Wyoming. It is there where Kanye began the concept of his eighth studio album, titled LOVE EVERYONE.
Kanye West - ye Listening Party - Full Experience
However, on May 1, 2018, Kanye was interviewed by TMZ. During his interview, he discussed several topics, including his support of Trump and, most infamously, his opinion on slavery. He stated that slavery was nothing more than a "choice" and garnered immediate backlash, forcing him to scrap LOVE EVERYONE altogether.[3][4] The listening party for the new album was held at Jackson Hole, Wyoming on May 31. Comedian Chris Rock hosted the event.[5] A few hours before the album's release, Kanye posted the track list for ye, which was nearly the same as the official track list except for "Medulla Oblongata", which was the original name for "All Mine".[6]
Artwork and Title[]
The album cover features the Teton Range, a mountain range located in Wyoming where Ye was recorded and produced at. It also features green text that reads "I hate being Bi-Polar it's awesome", confirming Kanye's bipolar disorder.
Kanye stated that he chose "ye" as the title of the album not only because it was a shortened version of his name, but because "I believe 'ye' is the most commonly used word in the Bible, and in the Bible it means 'you.' So, I'm you, I'm us, it's us. It went from Kanye, which means 'the only one,' to just Ye – just being a reflection of our good, our bad, our confused, everything."[7]
