"Yikes" is a song by Kanye West that was released as the second track from his eighth studio album, ye, on June 1, 2018.[1] It was also released as a single in the U.K. on June 8, 2018, and in the U.S. on June 11, 2018.[2]
In the song, Kanye raps about tripping out on prescription opioids, describing the highs someone could get from tripping out. The lyrics allude to Kanye's addiction to opioids after receiving liposuction surgery, which he revealed during his infamous TMZ interview in 2018.[3][4]
Production[]
The song heavily samples Black Savage's 1976 song, "Kothbiro".[5] Kanye first tried to incorporate the sample into a song when he first heard it back in 2006.[6]
Background[]
The song was initially written by Drake during the LOVE EVERYONE sessions and featured an entirely different beat. At one point, Drake even sang the hook for the song instead of Ye, which was partially leaked by Drake himself on his 100 Gigs website.[7][8] However, after Ye and Drake's beef began, his vocals were removed. Despite the beef, though, Drake was still given writing credits for the song. A demo version of the track revealed that it originally featured an electric guitar played by Mike Dean, but it was removed.[9]
