Jeffery Lamar Williams (born August 16, 1991), known professionally as Young Thug, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. Known for his eccentric vocal style and fashion, he is considered an influential figure in modern hip hop and trap music. Williams embarked on a musical career in 2011, releasing a series of mixtapes beginning with I Came from Nothing. In 2013, he signed with fellow Atlanta rapper Gucci Mane's 1017 Records and gained further attention and praise for his debut mixtape with the label, 1017 Thug, released in February of that year.[1]

Since May 2022, Williams has faced mounting legal troubles. He has been held without bail in the Fulton County Jail on remand due to being charged with violating the Georgia RICO Act, as well as a total of 56 counts of illegal substance trafficking or firearm possession charges. Williams was arrested alongside 27 other members of YSL on gang-related charges.[2] He has been denied bail four times, and Business Is Business was released during his incarceration.[3][1]

Williams is a very frequent collaborator of Kanye West, their collaborations dating back to December 2013.[4] According to Williams himself, Kanye and him recorded roughly 40 songs for Ye's 2016 album The Life Of Pablo, with the only one releasing being the song Highlights, marking their first ever collaboration.[5]

History (w/ Kanye West)[]

Jeffrey met Kanye around 2013 after visiting his house due to West's lack of a phone at the time.[6] At one point in time, West had planned to make a joint record with Young Thug. It's unknown if they had ever worked on this said collab record, but by December of that year Young Thug had began working alongside Kanye on his album Yeezus II, the songs "Famous" and "Highlights" being created between the Yeezus II and So Help Me God era.[7]

By the Waves era, Young Thug and Kanye had recorded roughly 40 different songs.[4] By the time Kanye had released his album The Life Of Pablo, only two of those songs had released; "Highlights" and "Famous" (Williams and Nina Simone were swapped out for Rihanna on the final chorus).[8] Williams would continue to work with Kanye throughout the Turbo Grafx 16 sessions, but their collaboration efforts had slowed down after that.

Williams would not be confirmed to have been collaborating with Kanye again until 2018 where he had featured on several Yandhi throwaway tracks and recorded a verse alongside Ty Dolla $ign on an early version of Hurricane.[9] Young Thug would also be given the song Amistad that originated from his cancelled album LOVE EVERYONE that would later be turned into Rich N*gga Shit featuring Juice WRLD that would release on October 15, 2021 for his album Punk.[10]

Young Thug would later record a verse for Kanye's song Remote Control after threatening to not speak with Kanye anymore had he not been featured on the record.[11] The song had released on August 30, 2021 alongside the rest of Donda and the sequel featuring Kid Cudi releasing with the deluxe on November 14th of the same year.[12][13]

Since 2022, Williams has been incarcerated and has been in court after his record label YSL was hit with RICO charges.[14] However, the song "River" featuring Thug and Leon Bridges has been previewed multiple times since then at Vultures listening parties and had been met with an official release on VULTURES 2.
